A Tribute to R.K. Laxman

Rich tributes were paid to R.K. Laxman, India’s great cartoonist whose ‘Common Man’ ruled the cartoonspace for about five decades. The event was held at the Children’s Pavilion of the World Book Fair on 17 February.

Noted artist and cartoonist Aabid Surti shared the memories of his days in Mumbai. Surti’s first cartoon was published in Times of India alongwith that of R.K. Laxman, he said. “Laxman was a very reserved person and no editor had the courage to make changes to his cartoons or his words. He reached the heights that no other cartoonist of India can reach,” Surti recalled.

Sharing his thoughts about cartoons, Tanmaya Tyagi, Chief Cartoonist with Tehelka, gave some tips to the would-be-cartoonists. “A cartoonist never offends anyone. He should read a lot. Note the ideas as and when they appear. Drawing skills and indepth reading alone makes a good cartoonist. In fact, he is an editor who draws,” said Tyagi.

Later, both the artists paid homage through their sketches to Laxman and Rajinder Puri, the cartoonist of The Statesman, who passed away on 17 Feb. 2015.
